What is Maximum Inspiratory Pressure (MIP)?

Maximum Inspiratory Pressure (MIP), also known as maximal inspiratory pressure or negative (opposing) inspiratory force, measures the strength of the inspiratory muscles, particularly the diaphragm and the muscles between the ribs (intercostal muscles). It is a clinical parameter used to assess respiratory muscle strength and function.

MIP is measured by asking an individual to inhale as deeply as possible against an occluded airway (closed mouth and nose). The maximum negative pressure generated during this effort is recorded in centimeters of water pressure. The measurement is usually expressed in negative values, indicating the strength of the inspiratory muscles.

Monitoring MIP can help healthcare professionals evaluate respiratory muscle function and guide interventions or rehabilitation programs to improve respiratory strength and function.
